Hurricanes are no strangers to Long Island and the Rockaways. June 1 marks the start of hurricane season. National Hurricane Preparedness Week each May serves as a reminder to begin preparations.
Start with these steps from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that you can – and should – take now:
- Develop an evacuation plan
- Assemble disaster supplies: food, water, batteries, chargers, radio, cash
- Get an insurance checkup and document your possessions
- Create a communication plan with a hand-written list of contacts
- Strengthen your home: trim trees, install storm shutters, seal outside wall openings
