What the NFL-ESPN Deal Means for Football Fans

Are you ready for some football? ESPN apparently is.

  • The NFL and the Disney-owned sports network have reportedly reached a deal that will see the NFL take a sizable stake in the sports network in exchange for placing several of the league’s own media holdings with ESPN.

Zoom in: In the deal, as reported today by The Athletic, the NFL is expected to give ESPN access to RedZone, NFL Network, the NFL’s fantasy football business, seven more regular-season games, and possibly more.

The big picture: The agreement, which sources briefed on the deal told the Athletic could be announced next week, coincides with ESPN’s coming direct-to-consumer service.

  • The new app will allow subscribers to watch all ESPN programming directly, without having to log in through cable or satellite providers.
