Mother Nature is increasingly unpredictable, and extreme weather events continue to become more frequent. National Hurricane Preparedness Week serves as an important reminder to begin preparing for hurricane season, which officially starts on June 1. Taking steps now can make a significant difference before a storm impacts our area.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommends the following preparedness steps:

  • Develop an emergency action plan for your household
  • Assemble disaster supplies, including:
    • Food and water
    • Batteries and chargers
    • Flashlights and radios
    • Cash and essential medications
  • Review your insurance coverage and document your possessions
  • Create a communication plan and maintain a handwritten list of important contacts
  • Strengthen your property by:
    • Trimming trees and branches
    • Installing storm shutters
    • Sealing outside wall openings and securing loose items

Preparedness today can help protect your family, property, and community tomorrow.
