Howard Tucker, a neurologist who was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest practicing doctor before his death at age 103 in late 2025.

In an essay written shortly before his passing, Tucker shared three simple rules he believed contributed to a long, happy life.

His key principles were:

  • Keep working and stay mentally active — Tucker believed retirement can accelerate decline and said having purpose and intellectual engagement helps keep the mind sharp.
  • Maintain strong relationships — He emphasized the importance of family, friendships, and social connection for emotional health and longevity.
  • Exercise and moderation — Rather than extreme diets or routines, he promoted staying physically active and avoiding excess.

The overall takeaway is that longevity is less about one “secret” and more about staying engaged, connected, and active throughout life.
